600 mm depth is the minimum; below that, hanging winter coats will foul the door. Clear height of at least 1400 mm for long garments and 1000 mm for short ones, with folding shelves 350-400 mm apart.

Going full height eliminates dust on top; the top cabinets take off-season bedding, accessed two or three times a year.

Hanging-to-folding ratio

Most households end up hanging about 60% and folding 40%, yet designs often start at 40% hanging and 60% folding, so the folding area fills up and hanging space runs short. We suggest taking stock of each family member is habits first.

Door types and hardware

Hinged doors look tidier and seal better; sliding doors save space but the tracks collect dust. Hinge count follows door height: two for up to 900 mm, three for 900-1600 mm, four for 1600-2100 mm.
